EXPERT RESPONSE
Absolutely -- in the US and a few other countries, anyway. The major alternative is CDMA, which is available in the United States from Sprint and Verizon. You can find a lot of information on CDMA at the CDMA Development Group.
There are other 3G standards recognized by the ITU; you can find more information on the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) 3G standard online. But keep in mind that UMTS and CDMA are the major options as of today, and both are defining upgrade paths to 4G that will carry them (and preserve their market share) for some time to come.
