How to install DHCP services for a Vista VPN

The second step in setting up a Vista VPN is to configure the server to act as a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server. This enables the server to assign IP addresses to VPN clients when they connect to the network. During the configuration process, you will have to create a DHCP scope. The IP addresses within the scope must not be in use anywhere on your customer's network and must fall into the same address range that is currently used.

To install the DHCP server role, follow these steps:

1. Log on as Administrator.
2. Open Server Manager.
3. Click on the Roles link.
4. Click on the Add Roles link.
5. When the Welcome screen appears, click Next.

6. Select the DHCP Server check box and click Next.
7. Click Next on the informational screen.
8. Verify that the check box associated with your server's NIC is selected and click Next.
9. Verify that the Parent Domain name is set to Contoso.com and that the Preferred DNS Server IPv4 Address field contains the server's own IP address.
10. Click Next.
11. Select the WINS Is Not Required For Applications on this Network option and click Next.
12. Click the Add button and create a DHCP scope. IP addresses within the scope must be unique, but must match the address range used by the other machines on the network.
13. Make sure that the Activate this Scope check box is selected and click OK.
14. Click Next.
15. Choose the option to disable IPv6 Stateless Mode for the server and click Next.
16. Choose the Use the Current Credentials option and click Next.
17. Confirm the information shown on the summary screen and click the Install button.
18. When the installation process completes, click Close.
19. Reboot the server.
