WAN optimization becomes huge market

Local and wireless networking products have gotten most of the attention in the market recently, but wide area networks and, more precisely, WAN optimization have become an enormous market.

Infonetics Research estimates that the WAN optimization appliance market alone grew 49% in 2005, increasing the number of units shipped by 39%. The report predicts double-digit growth through 2009.

The field has also gotten crowded with new products. But that can be a good thing, because the WAN requirements of customers vary so widely that the VARs and resellers working with them have to support several major options.

Customers are willing to pay for fast WANs, though; and many of the new products are easy enough that VARs providing them have little to do but plug them in and let them know where the rest of the network can be found.
