Channel Chat: Dimension Data exec explores Cisco EnergyWise

Last year Nortel used an expensive ad campaign to publicly rib Cisco for not being green enough. Nortel called the heavy cost of Cisco's so-called inefficient equipment "The Cisco Energy Tax." These days, post bankruptcy, Nortel doesn't have time or money for fancy ad campaigns. But Cisco is using this economic downturn to promote an energy-saving software, Cisco EnergyWise, that it promises will immediately result in savings.

The software, which will be available as an upgrade or refresh, can be built into Catalyst switches to measure and report the energy use of IP network-attached devices ranging from phones and laptops to access points. Using the software, administrators will be able to shut off devices when they're not in use.

By 2010, Cisco EnergyWise will also be able to monitor and cut energy costs in building systems, such as lighting, heating and elevators. That addition is part of Cisco's goal to make business systems part of the network. And for partners it could mean a new business practice.
