Learn more about PoE
Our Power over Ethernet Crash Course is a PoE primer designed specifically for resellers

Power over Ethernet offers the value-added reseller (VAR) and networking consultant specializing in network architecture the benefits of flexibility and cost savings -- which can be passed on to customers. This tip explains how Power over Ethernet is defined by the 802.3af standard, what equipment is needed to run Power over Ethernet and the costs associated with doing so.

Power over Ethernet for network architects

Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology simplifies the task of the network architect. Voice over IP (VoIP) phones, ceiling-mounted wireless access points and surveillance cameras are not always located near an AC wall outlet. PoE provides a way to supply electricity to these low-power devices through a standard CAT5 cable.

Power over Ethernet reduces network implementation costs by eliminating the need to provide individual power supplies for each VoIP phone and by making it unnecessary to install AC outlets near ceiling-mounted access points. These savings may be offset by the cost of new switches or midspans.

Get more info on the implementation and history of Power over Ethernet technology as it is defined by the 802.3af standard.
