Proper planning before making changes on an existing network is a fundamental necessity. Responsible VARs and systems integrators (SIs) should have test and backout plans before going into the data center and moving switches around. From the staging process to keeping an eye on the clock during the change, the keyword is caution.

Network engineering overview: Techniques for making changes

SIs who are asked to install new hardware on their customer's network should be prepared for the possibility that their installation will go awry. Proper staging and planning can help assure a successful change.

Some important tips include:

  • Do as much as you can ahead of time.
  • Identify your "go/no-go" times so you can watch the clock during the change.
  • Make sure you have the tools and assistance you need to do remote configuration.

Network test plan: Construction and checklist

A network change's chances of success are much greater if you perform several simple tests along the way, rather than waiting until you think you're done and discovering that something doesn't work.

Find more information on network test plans, including a connectivity checklist.
