Daemonlogger for packet capture and redirection

Welcome to the 4th edition of Traffic Talk, a regular SearchNetworkingChannel.com series for network solution providers and consultants who troubleshoot business networks.

In this article I'll demonstrate two novel features of Marty Roesch's Daemonlogger tool.

Daemonlogger is a packet capture tool written by Snort author Marty Roesch. I first mentioned it in my blog in April 2007. You can download Daemonlogger from "Marty's user page; the version hosted on the Snort download page doesn't appear current.

A look at the help switch for Daemonlogger demonstrates some of its capabilities:

USAGE: daemonlogger [-options]
-c Log packets and exit
-d Daemonize at startup
-f Load BPF filter from
-F Flush the pcap buffer for each packet
-g Set group ID to

-i Grab packets from interface
-l Log to directory
-m Generate log files and quit
